Remote Desktop does not connect after a Windows update

Problem:

After updating Windows, Remote Desktop is not able to connect to my Virtual Machine (on a local network or on a cloud). It gives an error message:

Cause:

A Microsoft update for Windows released on May 08 2018 caused this behavior.

Solution:

On your machine (the machine that you are trying to RDP with):

  • Open Group Policy Editor
  • Change the Group Policy value: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Credentials Delegation -> Encryption Oracle Remediation
  • Check the "Enabled" checkbox and
  • Change the "Protection Level" drop down value to "Vulnerable"
